Description

First report on the conquest of Aconcagua (6,959 m) and Tupungato (6,570 m) in 1897, written by the expedition leader, Edward Arthur FitzGerald. The summit of Aconcagua was first reached on January 14, 1897, by Matthias Zurbriggen, after four unsuccessful attempts, and again on February 13 by two other members of FitzGerald's expedition, Stuart Vines and Nicola Lanti. Exciting narrative, both objective and poetic, which brings curious information about how mountaineering was practiced at the end of the 19th century and which describes the grandeur of the landscape and the feelings (and suffering) of the protagonists of this great adventure, in their commitment to find a path that would take them to the top. This edition was organized by Marcelo Delvaux, an experienced mountain guide and an expert on Aconcagua, having led numerous expeditions to the Roof of the Americas. The original text was enriched by explanatory notes and a photo gallery, with the translator carrying out work to reconstruct the route followed by FitzGerald and his companions, identifying the places described in the narrative.
